People in their teens to early thirties can put themselves ahead of the game when it comes to their finances by following some key financial planning guidelines. Read below and use these points so that your financial life can pay off for you.

Tip #1: Set Up A 401k and Continuously Increase Your Contributions

One of the foundations of your financial life should be a 401k retirement plan. When you take your first job after high school or college, do yourself a favor and take advantage of one of these accounts. Start out by contributing about 7 percent of your income to this account and continuously increase this contribution year after year until you are able to set aside 15 percent. You can make this easier and take it a step further by setting up your account to allow automatic deductions into your 401k.

Tip #2: Set Up A Lifestyle Of Savings So That You Can Handle Emergencies

Your goal should be to build your finances to the point that you can make your money work for you through sound investments. However, before you can invest, you need to set up a savings account that can cover you in the event of an emergency. Regardless of your obligations, you need to set up an emergency fund that should account for 3 to 6 months of income. If it is difficult for you to do this at first, you should at the very least work toward contributing $100 per month or about 10 percent per month.

Tip #3: Hire A Financial Planner

You stand to gain a lot by hiring a financial planner or financial advisers because these professionals can help you with your goals. They will be able to build your portfolio and provide you with guidance that navigates you through risk.
